A 2026 ISLAND GUIDE

Three Days On Oahu: How to Do the Island Right

Three days in Waikiki may sound short, but if you plan it well, it is enough to fall hard for Oahu without ever feeling rushed. You’ll see the postcard version of Waikiki and even some parts most visitors miss. You’ll hike, swim, eat, and still have time to do absolutely nothing on the sand. And if you need a place to stay, Oasis Hotel Waikiki is running a limited-time Summer Offer, giving you 20% off your room and discounted daily $35 valet parking (savings of $10 per night) if you book three or more nights.

Arrive, unpack, walk to the beach

Day 1: Settle Into Waikiki

Don’t overthink day one. Most flights into Honolulu land late morning or early afternoon so by the time you’ve checked in, dropped your bags, and changed clothes, the best move is the simplest one: head straight to Waikiki Beach. Find a stretch of sand that feels right (the area in front of Kuhio Beach is great for swimming, while the Fort DeRussy section tends to be quieter). Float for an hour. Let the time zone catch up with you. Have a mid-day mai tai.

Once you’re warmed up, wander. Kalakaua Avenue runs the length of Waikiki and offers everything from luxury shopping at the Royal Hawaiian Center to ABC stores stocked with snacks, sunscreen, and souvenirs. Stop at the Duke Kahanamoku statue to pay respects to the father of modern surfing. Grab a shave ice from Island Vintage Shave Ice.

End the day with your first sunset, likely the one you’ll also remember the most. Find a spot on the sand or on a beachfront patio. Duke’s Waikiki is the classic, feet-near-the-sand vibe, mai tais, and live music, and Hula Grill upstairs is quieter.

Day 2: Get Out of Waikiki

Sunrise (optional): Diamond Head
Up early? Hike Diamond Head for sunrise. It is a short, steep 1.6 mile round trip with incredible views. Non residents need reservations, so book ahead. Not a morning person? Go later in your trip.

Morning to mid-day: Pick your adventure
Choose your Oahu:

  • Option A: North Shore drive: Road trip the windward coast with stops at Hanauma Bay, Halona Blowhole, and Lanikai Beach. Continue to the North Shore for surf and shrimp trucks at Giovanni’s. Scenic and full day.
  • Option B: Snorkeling + history: Snorkel Hanauma Bay (reserve 48 hours ahead), then visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial.
  • Option C: Hike + waterfall: Hike Manoa Falls (1.5 miles through bamboo forest) and grab lunch nearby.

Evening: Local food or luau
Skip the luau if you have been before. Try Helena’s Hawaiian Food or Highway Inn for classic Hawaiian food. First time? Do a luau.

Day 3: Slow It Back Down

Morning: A long, slow breakfast
Take it easy and enjoy a proper morning at Oasis Hotel Waikiki, or head out to Goofy Café; Dine for loco moco, Heavenly Island Lifestyle for a fresh brunch, or Liliha Bakery if you are up for the drive. The coco puffs are worth it.

Mid-day: One more swim
End with a final, unhurried swim. Stay close to Oasis Hotel Waikiki or head back to Lanikai. No plans, no phone, just the water.

Afternoon: Diamond Head or shopping
If you skipped Diamond Head, go now. It gets hot, so aim for early or just before sunset.

If you already did it, spend the afternoon at Royal Hawaiian Center, International Market Place, or browsing boutiques in Kaimuki. Pick up macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, and Hawaiian honey.

Evening: A sunset to remember
Plan dinner around sunset. House Without A Key at the Halekulani is a classic with open air dining, live music, and a view of Diamond Head. Book ahead. Or keep it simple with a drink and a beach walk.

What to Pack for 3 Days in Waikiki

  • Reef safe sunscreen, required by Hawaii law and better for the reefs
  • A light rain jacket, brief showers can pass through, especially on the windward side
  • Water shoes if you plan to snorkel at Hanauma Bay
  • A slightly dressier outfit for a nice dinner, Waikiki style is relaxed but still polished
  • An extra swimsuit, three days go by quickly and you will want options
